Creating Unique Viscoelastic Materials
The combination of the flexible PDMS backbone and the crosslinkable pendant vinyl groups allows PVMS to be formulated into unique materials like plastogels. These are soft, coherent gels that exhibit both plastic and elastic characteristics.
In a typical formulation, PVMS is partially crosslinked, creating a microscopic network that can flow under high shear but maintains its shape under low shear. Applications include:
Soft-Touch Coatings: Provides a durable, velvety, and dry-feel coating on plastics and textiles for consumer electronics and automotive interiors.
Damping Gels: Used to encapsulate and protect sensitive components from vibration and shock.
Cosmetic Gels: Imparts a non-tacky, smooth texture in long-wear makeup and skincare products, where the crosslinking enhances transfer resistance.
