The Backbone of Addition-Cure Silicones A Reactive Building Block

05 - Feb - 2026 HENGDA Group

Vinyl Terminated Silicone Fluid is not an end-product but a fundamental reactive precursor in platinum-catalyzed addition-cure systems. Its defining feature is the presence of vinyl (CH₂=CH-) groups at the ends of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chain. These terminal vinyl groups are highly reactive sites that participate in hydrosilylation, the cornerstone reaction for creating high-performance silicone elastomers and resins.

The Backbone of Addition-Cure Silicones A Reactive Building Block

When combined with a crosslinker containing multiple silicon-hydrogen (Si-H) bonds (typically Methyl Hydrogen Silicone Fluid) in the presence of a platinum catalyst, the vinyl groups form robust ethylene bridges (Si-CH₂-CH₂-Si). This reaction creates a dense, thermally stable, and cross-linked network. The molecular weight and vinyl content of the fluid provide precise control over the final material's properties, including crosslink density, modulus, and elongation. This makes it the essential starting point for manufacturing Liquid Silicone Rubbers (LSR), Heat-Cured Rubbers (HCR), and soft potting compounds.
